  1. Some causes of downward mobility in US education include the spiraling cost of higher education and the level of social segregation and the excessive link between home background and success in school changing the supply between secondary school and university. The spiraling cost of higher education in the United States if often cited as a barrier – and the collective student debt has exceeded a trillion dollars. The rising cost of higher education is a deterrent. And there is a wider question of finance for higher education at state level. But it seems that the education system is no longer holding the door open to the brightest and the best, regardless of background.

Some effects of downward mobility in US education include more children who don’t reach the university level and people who fail to graduate from a university. About one in five young adults in the US are now defined in educational terms as “downwardly mobile” – such as children who have graduate parents but who don’t reach a university level themselves. Then there is the problem that too many people who enroll at a university fail to graduate – which pushes down the graduation rate in international comparisons.

I think, since we haven’t had these problems before, we should look at what we are doing differently to address this problem. “If you lose the confidence in the idea that effort and investment in education can change life chances, it’s a really serious issue,” says Mr. Schleicher. I couldn’t agree more with this quote because basically we are looking at education differently and that is changing how many people go to college and stay in it until graduation. There are so many more students that have the money to further their education, but choose to drop out. That is pushing down our graduation rates at international levels and showing the rest of the world what kind of a society we are becoming. All in all, I think we should start by putting more effort and investment into education and that will help us in life too.

  2. The cost of getting a higher education is rapidly increasing along with creating a larger social gaps are causing downward mobility in American education. As the price of going to college gets higher this causes young adults not being able to go to college and get a proper education. This causes a large amount of people not being able to get proper jobs in their future that they can live on. In addition, the gap between social classes are increasing due to the fact that only the rich are able to get a quality education whereas the middle class can’t.
There are many effects to downward mobility in US education. One of these effects are that a large percentage of aren’t able to pay for an education. The effect of a rapid increase in getting
a higher education is that people who pay for college are thousands of dollar in debt. In addition, studies show that children born in a middle class family are expected to slip downwards rather than move upward. This shows that price of education is slowly creating a larger gap between social classes.
In order to solve this problem the government should tax the rich more. This wil solve the problem by allowing more money to be distributed in the economy causing more people to spend money. Furthermore, it will allow people to have money to spend money on college without being in debt.

  3. The two main causes for downward mobility in education are the high costs and the segregation based on income. Children are sent to school based on where they live. The people who live in poor areas get a poorer education because the teachers don't have the time to focus on each student. The rich can afford to send their kids to good schools if the town does not have a good school of their own. College has become more of a business rather than an option for striving students. People are now required to attend college just to get a decent job. They end up thousands of dollars in debt and one of the effects of downward mobility is that they have to work long hours to have a home, food, car, and pay off their debt. College students start their life tied down with debt when they are supposed to be "free." They work to pay off all of their loans for every necessity their life requires. While people are busy paying off their debt, they have no money to save. This leaves their children with the same life circumstances because their parents couldn't save any money. I think more scholarships should be given out. If students are required to attend college to have a decent life, then colleges should provide more financial aid rather than leaving the students with tons of loans. College shouldn't be a business but rather an aid to help eager students succeed.

  4. What are the causes of downward mobility in US education? Discuss at least 2

There are many reasons why the US is dwindling down the spiral of US education. However, the main reasons why this is happening is because the appalling costs of higher education and social segregation. The US is built on the fundamental values of equal opportunity, but it seems like the government and education institutions has forgotten this principle. The cost of a college education has skyrocketed the last decade with more than a trillion dollars in debt. As a result, more people are choosing not to attend college, thus many jobs like doctors, and accountants can not be filled because it is too expensive to receive an education. Also, it is completely unfair that many children are born with a "label" depending where they are born. They are sent to the schools and doctors that are available in that area. Many times these children do not receive a proper education because of the low teacher to student ratio compared to the rich who have hundreds of choices to where their children can receive and education.

What are the effects of downward mobility in US education? Discuss at least 2

There are many effects of the downward mobility of US education. About 1 out of 5 young adults can not reach university level education in comparison to their parents who have reached that level. As a result, many jobs that require a college education can not be filled. The US spends so much money on pretty much everything, and if the costs of college education keeps rising the US will eventually have to hire people from foreign countries to fulfill these positions. Also, since some children are trapped in the schools that are available to them it becomes almost impossible to break out of this glass. They can see the opportunities available to them, but it is impossible to break out and reach for it because of the outrageous prices.

What do you think can and should be done to address this problem?

America needs to re-evaluate itself. Changing a few things will not fix this problem. If anything this problem will only increase. I believe the only way to fix the education problem in America is to change how the education system works. A few more scholarships or taxes will not fix the problem, it will help a handful of students, but not a nation as a whole. The US needs to change how it distributes wealth among its citizens. The US must commit to its funds to help the poverty stricken areas for at least 5-10 years, not only when a disaster strikes for a few months. Education should be an opportunity, not a luxury.

  5. The downward mobility in US education are caused by many reasons. Everyone came to America for the "American Dream", but now the US is where someone with poorly-educated parents is less likely to reach a college and less likely to make it in the world. The cost of higher education is astounding! College is money enough but even if you do not have a scholarship it can even double. Paying for college shouldn't be something you are in debt for your whole life, yes we have to pay, but the prices are ridiculous. Social segregation is another big cause of this whole problem. If kids go to a worse school because they like in a poor area or whatnot, they are less likely to move up.

Some effects of downward mobility in US education include more children who don’t reach the university level and people who fail to graduate from a university. And about one in five young adults in the US are now defined in educational terms as "downwardly mobile" who had graduate parents, but themselves have not graduated. In fact, about a quarter of children born into the middle class were expected to slip downwards. Many jobs require a college diploma and if you cannot supply one you will have to pursue what may not be your "dream" but do anything to make money.

I think America needs a big makeover. We use to be on top of the game in education, now we've been overcome by Europe and Asia. This problem in downward mobility will only increase because we aren't doing anything to stop it. I know tons of people get scholarships, but academic and athletic, but not everyone can apply to those. I think we should set up some more for the less fortunate or people who don't go to the best schools so they should get a look at too. Also getting an education was one of the fundamentals the US was made on. We are completely ignoring our past because it wasn't happening before. Maybe America needs to take a step back and look at itself. Do we really want to be this land that promised the "American Dream" but when our own government hasn't woken up to see the issues?

  6. 1. The causes of downward mobility in the United States Education System are things such as inequality in the school system and the cost of education. Collective student debt has exceeded a million dollars to provide a full education that leads to a more successful adult. Studies are also showing a decline in education statistics based on harboring effects of racial and social inequality in school.

    2. There are many downward effects to the mobility of US education. One is the fact that this is the first time in history where most of the young US generation will not be smarter than their parents and have as good of an education as them. They are also saying that if you are born poor, you will be poor throughout your entire life. Many years ago everyone had an equal chance of rising to the top.

    3. There isn't much that I think can be done. I think as these generations grow up that we should spend much more time on equality teaching to today's youth. This problem will resolve itself as time goes on. There is also the idea of making scholarships easier to attain and trying to improve the education quality the public schools in America are providing. Encouraging kids to work as hard as they can to achieve maximum goals is an ideal quality as well.

  7. 1. the causes of downward mobility are that less and less people are going to college to fill the higher paid jobs because the cost keeps rising, making it harder for lower income families to send children to college and because of inequality of schooling, where there is a larger rate of ungraduated people then there was.
2.Two effects of this downward mobility are that it is very hard to move upward in society and easier to move down in society. Another would be that most jobs now need some sort of diploma, creating holes that need to be filled.
    3. To fix this problem the government needs college to be paid for, just like a public high school. This would cause a large amount of people who couldn't afford college to be able to afford it.

  8. Two causes of downward mobility in the US education is the higher cost of income for schooling and the segregation based on social class and wealth. Students go to a school based on the conditions where they live so if they were to be born into a more lower class family it is more than likely that they would be sent into a lower class school where they are less likely to stay. Because of the lack of money for collages people are also more likely not to go to collage at all and take mediocre jobs fit for their class. As a result jobs that require a collage level education (like a doctor) are less likely to be filled and people in the middle class will not move up from this class, and even when they do it is only by so little.
The only way I really believe that will fix this is by taxing the rich more. By doing so the government will allow more money into the education system thus lowering (if only by a little) the cost of collage. Another way for this to be done is by just lowering the cost of collage all tougher, of course this seems like part of “ideal world.” And is likely to happen it is one of the few ways to help those that cannot afford collage a little help.

  9. One cause of downward mobility in U.S education is the rising cost of higher education. It is incredibly expensive to attend college; so many young people are opting to pursue a career right out of high school instead. Another cause of downward mobility in U.S education is insecurity. Due to the recession, many young people born into the middle class will not stay there, and therefore may see college as an unattainable feat.
A result of the downward mobility in U.S education is that many jobs that require a higher level of education, such as a doctor, cannot be filled because so few people are actually obtaining higher levels of education. Another effect is that more students, about 1 in 5, are defined in educational terms as “downwardly mobile.”
This problem can be solved by increasing the taxes on the rich. This extra tax money can be used to strengthen and better the public education system so that more students are ready and able to attend college.

  10. 1. The causes of downward mobility in the United States Education is in my opinion mainly based on inequality for genders, social status and for races. Schools such as all female or all male schools are schools that have the potential of providing quality education for all but they do not, therefore resulting in downward mobility. Also Universities and Colleges demand high tuition rates and most people end up taking loans from banks, but what about the people that are not capable of that. They are limited to their quality education. In my opinion quality education in the United States is limited to the people that can afford it, which in my opinion is not right.

    2. Downward effects of this mobility in the US is that in the article it had stated that for once in history a generation will not be smarter than the parents before. I believe that this is relatively true especially with the advancements in technology and how easy everything has become. Therefore due to many advancements in technology and how some schools enforce the use of technology instead of the traditional methods and those school spiral into the future of the children not being as smart as their parents.

    3. Fix the bloody education system, I strongly believe that the United states educational department should hire oprah and oprah will simply put more education, funding, and proper learning materials under the obese butts of the United States education department. Oprah 2016!! no but to be completely honest, this inequality is a tad dopey, foolish, goosey, goosy, gooselike, jerky blockheaded, boneheaded, duncical, duncish, fatheaded, loggerheaded, thick, thickheaded, thick-skulled, wooden-headed
cloddish, doltish dense, dim, dull, dumb. No matter where you are from or how you live your life in this country everyone deserves a quality education.

  11. 1. One cause of downward mobility in US education is the lack of opportunity. Many Americans can't afford to go to private or state colleges, and therefore, can't attend. Another reason why US education is on a downward spiral is because the middle class is disappearing. The middle class is becoming a land with either rich people or poor people, and the in between area is disintegrating.
    2. One effect of downward mobility in US education is, primarily, that United States citizens aren't getting educated. The poor, who have not received a secondary education, cannot get high-paying jobs which require a lot education. Another effect of the downward spiral in US education is that the United States cannot advance in the world. The world is getting educated, but in the United States, we are not. How can we compete if the country (as a whole) doesn't know anything?
    3. We have to make elementary, middle, and high school education interesting and enlightening in all schools, including schools in poor locations. Many impoverish kids did not receive a good education in elementary school, middle school school kids are introduced to drugs and violence early, and high school kids drop out of schools to join gangs. If school is interesting, enlightening, and friendly, these poor kids will be more willing to stay in school and continue their education.

  12. 1. College in particular is a very expensive yet vital form of education, and so many people do not go for financial reasons. This is an unfortunate cause of downward mobility as well as the widely experienced insecurity that the disappearing middle class faces. We live in a country where you're either rich or poor, the in between class is fading fast.

    2. Many economists speculate that within the next ten years, other countries will end up surpassing us as one of the most prominent economies in the world. China specifically is advancing much faster than we are. We are going to lose our status as a sophisticated economy.

    3. To solve this problem, schools need to encourage kids to work harder for scholarships and to start preparing for college earlier. Parents need to save whatever they can and need to be taught when their children are young that college is important and needs to be saved for.

  13. 1. Two causes of downward mobility in the US are college and no opportunity. These two examples go hand in hand. College is one cause that is very common these days due to the rising tuition costs. Going to college is necessary in order to obtain a good career in America and many people do not attend because they cannot afford to go. People living in more poor areas do not have the money to attend a private school and the school in their town is most likely not the best, therefore, from the start they are getting the same opportunities as others and cannot afford any better.
    2. Two effects of downward mobility in education in the US is people who do not make it to the College level and do not graduate from college. There is a fraction of people defined as "downwardly mobile" who do not graduate or get a lower degree than their parents. Also the idea that if you are poor when you are born, then you will most likely be poor for the rest of your life.
    3. I think that there are things that should be done to fix this problem. Colleges are very expensive and they rise year after year. Maybe colleges should lower tuition and give more ways for people to get scholarships. Also schools in bad areas should be fixed up and teachers should be hired that will be able to turn around the school in a positive way, giving their students a better platform for the rest of their lives.

  14. One of the main causes for downward mobility in US education is that the cost is getting higher and higher. This is often cited as a barrier. The total student debt is over a trillion dollars, this can be hard to recover from especially in the US’s current economy. Also, segregation between social class is making it more difficult for lower class Americans to get into college. Sending a child to college used to be a “defining metaphor for the country.” But, now education systems are focusing more on somebody’s background instead of how smart they are. Both of these reasons contribute to the downward mobility of the US education system.

Some effects of downward mobility in US education are that many people who get into college never graduate because they can’t afford to continue. People in the US are less likely to reach university than almost any other industrial country because it is too expensive and exclusive. The fact that fewer people graduate, pushes down the graduation rate in international comparisons makes the US not the greatest place when it comes to education. “The annual OECD education statistics show that only about one in five young adults reaches a higher level education than their parents.” Kids who have’t graduated while their parents have, are defined as “downwardly mobile” in educational terms.

To address this problem I think that the government should offer more financial help to lower income citizens. This way they will want to and be able to go to college and graduate. I realize that some financial aid is already given, but I don’t think it is enough to make a difference. Another idea would be for government to force colleges to charge less.
