  1. The values of the Guerrilla Gardening subculture I observed differ from those of mainstream American culture in that the group of gardeners does this because it makes them feel good. They value the environment and this is their way of helping out. They weren’t asked to do this and if anything, they were taking a risk by gardening on public property without permission. They value hard work and the rewards that come from it. It seems as though the mainstream American culture is lazy and only values luxury and leisure. It is almost like we won’t do anything without some sort of profit, which is the opposite of the Guerrilla Gardening subculture.

Subcultures aid in the process of socialization by bringing something new and positive to our society. The Guerrilla Gardening subculture group helped show that there are people out there who do things out of the goodness of their heart and not for any kind of profit. They opened the minds and changed the way people look at our society. They did it to not only help clean up garbage and save the environment, but also to bring people together. The gardeners mentioned how they met people they otherwise wouldn’t have and how they had all different kinds of people that came out to help. So now not only have they brought people together, but they’ve inspired other people to do something similar.

I think that subcultures help socialization. They bring somewhat of cultural diversities to our society. Subcultures open your mind to a new way of looking at something within your own culture. They help guide our main culture to seeing things that could help it. They have a good influence of, as I mentioned earlier, bringing people together. There is a power in all different groups of people working together to do something great and that is why I think subcultures help socialization.

  2. The Krumping subculture is different that the mainstream American culture in the sense that krumping allows the dancers to express their emotions in a way that feels natural to them. There is no judgement from others. Each dance move that they have stands for a different messages. This way allows the members to communicate to each other, but at the same time open up and vent about what's on their mind. Krumping is completely free. No religion. No ethnic background. It's a release for many of the people and in the American culture we don't have much of that.

I think that certain subcultures help us socialize while others hinder our socialization process. Some subcultures become so popular that they become accepted by the majority, eventually becoming a norm. It allows people to bond over what they like that society doesn't yet accept. Other subcultures, such as video games, take our time away from socializing properly. They focus on bonding over things that will not allow the society to prosper.

  3. The values of the krumping subculture differ from those of mainstream American culture. American culture can split you up depending on your age, religion, sex, or color. Being “organized” into these clicks, so to speak, is something we do without even noticing. In krumping nothing matters. They don’t judge you based on your home problems, religion, race, or even your gender. You speak through dance, no graffiti or words are necessary, just you and your moves. Drama can’t happen, which is something common in American culture.
I think subcultures help socialization. They show other sides of society. It’s like not everyone has to conform and be the same. I think that’s the beauty of culture, how not everyone shares the same one and there’s always another group out there for you. You are never alone. Also subcultures help us evolve. More are occurring every single day, no one has to be alone because there are others who may have the same values as you or view things like you. As long as you’re not setting fire to kitties, let’s just say, subcultures help socialization because they can help people find a common belief.

  4. Cyclists
Well the subculture of cyclists differs highly from the american culture. Mainly because it is a hobby that brings everyone together and at times like these race, religion, beliefs and any other aspect that defines a persons opinion is put aside. All of these people are defined as one, a cyclist, even though each one has their own personality they are in their own subculture that focuses on a certain hobby. Unlike American culture which literally is the complete opposite, this is where you are judged by race, religion and any other belief of the world that you have. But together we are defined as Americans, in my opinion I believe that Americans are a different from one another and some people just simply can not accept that.

Subcultures aid socialization by simply bringing people together. Such as the "pack" that is described in the video the people are brought together by a common goal or purpose, in this case bikes. So subcultures do bring people together but not all kinds of people, people that share the same interests. Honestly I believe that subcultures are like little clubs in our society that people that share the same hobby as one another can simply join without any question, its just for the love of the hobby. It's like in this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=u6XAPnuFjJc#!) Why do people spend their weekends doing all of these things such as cycling or playing music? Because it satisfies them and brings them together with other people for a common purpose.

  5. The Art of Puppetry & Marionettes-
One way that the values of this subculture vary from mainstream American culture is that these people are perfectly happy just being themselves. They love what they do, and they don’t care what other people think about it. Being a puppeteer is not the most popular job in the world, but the people of this subculture thoroughly enjoy doing it and love the reactions they get from their audiences. The mainstream American values would tell you to value others opinions and actually care what people think and try to fit into the mainstream society.
Subcultures aid in the process of socialization in many ways. One way is that they help people to find one group that they can identify with. Subcultures bring people with similar loves, interests, and hobbies together to socialize. Subcultures allow people to express themselves freely as well. For example, one man in the video explained that as a teenager he became sick and therefore was very depressed. He turned to puppetry and it allowed him to express how he felt about his illness. I believe that subcultures help rather than hinder the process of socialization. It gives people others to identify with and helps them to know that they aren’t the only ones out there with these interests.

  6. The cycling subculture is completely fascinating to watch. It was like each bike had its own personality and it was like they were not objects, but friends. Mainstream American culture portrays Americans as lazy and obese. America is the most obese nation in the world. However, the cycling subculture is an inspiring movement that changes the lifestyles for a few for the better. Bikes are an escape from the world and makes them feel alive. This hobby became a lifestyle for these people, and plus it's really healthy!

Subcultures aid the process of socialization. It brings people with similar interests together and as a group they find find who they truly are as individuals and as a subculture. For example, the Cycling subculture brings people who love this sport together. Color of the skin, religion, socioeconomic background, ethnicity, or any outside feature do no matter to these people. The only thing that matters is they all have the mutual love for riding their bikes. Subcultures do not hinder socialization. There is nothing wrong with people who come together to celebrate a common interest, if it makes them happy, why does that matter to society? They help each other progress in their own little ways. I believe as long as people are happy in their own chosen subculture, nothing is wrong.

  7. The values of this subculture is that they don't just see their bikes as bikes, they see their bikes are a part of themselves. Without their bikes they wouldn't be who they were. The bikes make the people, not the people make the bikes. It is also fascinating how their are different groups of biking, and that is seems that they don't really mix. It seems like they are two distinct groups. The biking also differs from mainstream American culture in that if you can't keep up they drop you, that you can only be with them if you are good enough.

I think this aids the process of socialization in that it brings different groups of people together. These bike riders are from all the different groups in society. The old, the young, the rich, and the poor, for example, can all be brought together to socialize with each other, merging the groups in today's society. I think that this type of subcultures help socialization. It is what I said, they bring different groups of different cultures together, putting people together that would never socialize without it.

  8. The roller derby subculture differs from mainstream America in many ways, the most obvious being that roller derby is not considered a legitimate pastime. Mainstream Americans may go rollerblading for fun, but several of us do not consider it a competitive sport. From viewing the interviews, I can conclude that the values of the people in the roller derby subculture are the same of anyone else with a passion. They value hard work, dedication to the sport, and teamwork, just like every other team sport. Something that many subcultures don't realize is that every one can find something in common, especially the ones involving hobbies. They all value the same virtues, even though what they are so passionate about may vary.

Generally, subcultures help socialization by helping people find their niche. In finding a place to feel accepted, people are more likely to become more social and confident rather than closing off to that specific subculture. Subcultures also really help people feel better about themselves and their problems. As a result, people are more likely to be satisfied with their social lives and to be happier; and happy people are productive people.

This is a great example of how subcultures can help society. Members of certain subcultures, like the members of the roller derby subculture, can find ways to use their passion for a good cause. They donate their time and energy into using roller derby to make a difference because its something that they're passionate about. In turn, subcultures can learn to help each other out. This coordination brings subcultures together. However, there are definitely instances where subcultures can divide cultures into something resembling cliques, which drives people apart and makes them think that they cannot connect with people outside of their subculture.

  9. Guerrilla Gardening
Guerrilla Gardening is different from mainstream American Culture because you don't really hear about people wanting to work with the environment and do something to make it happen. The people in this video said that they like doing the Guerilla Gardening and it makes them feel good, and that it also helps out Los Angeles since people don't have backyards. Kenneth even said that he wanted to do a Guerilla Gardening event with his friends on his birthday one year instead of going out and having drinks, which is something that many people do in mainstream American culture to celebrate their birthdays Seeing an area of land that was filled with garbage or didn't have any plants or vegetation and making it a garden that people can enjoy is something that they enjoy doing without asking anything in return, which isn't really considered in mainstream American culture today. Subcultures help aid the process of socialization by helping to promote positivity and community service in American culture, since it isn't something you hear about every day. The Guerilla Gardeners get to use their time in a positive way and do something good for the environment that they like doing as well as be with their friends. It helps people socialize and try something new while making the environment healthier and prettier to look at. It's a better thing to be doing rather than causing trouble or sitting back and watching the world go by without being involved at all.

  10. Krump
The values are different when it comes to family. The people of this subculture are each others family. This is different becuase it is not the tradtitional idea of what a family should be and they are together in different environments. Also the things that the people of Krump do (such as stay out late and dance on the street) is not acceptable to many mainstream ideas and traditional values. Subcultures aid the process of socialization because as the subculture grows and more people start to realize that it exists, the more accepting people become of it. I think that subcultures help and hinder socialization. I think this because subcultures can help people become more accepting of a certain thing, but this can also start another subculture that is against another one, which can cause a problem with socialization.

  11. I watched the Derby Girls video. I would love to do it. I don't really get that it's a subculture but I guess. The girls are tough, the crowd is tough, and the sport is worse. I still don't really understand what they're trying to do, like the purpose of the game, the points, the positions, but I respect them and the idea. I dig the idea of this being an outlet for aggression, it's kind of like a Fight club. Who you are in the ring is not who you really are in "society." People have whole other lives. The support system that comes from it is wonderful, and the bonds that must be made should say something about the connections humans get. The protection, on and off the court is heart filling.

  12. When people who live in other countries they think of America to be a place full of obese people. But, the cycling video shows people that inside of America there are healthy people that make exercising part of their lifestyle. Also, cycling in America has a more vital use than transportation. It’s a hobby that helps people connect with each other. Each bike that a cyclist owns has a special meaning to them. This helps identity cyclists own culture and creates a subculture in society that connect people with each other.

From this video I learned that subcultures are an important part of society. Subcultures help unite people together so that they may reach one goal and at the same time help society advance by expressing different views. Subcultures help change the way that people live so that they may bring people together.
